About Us

Located on a hilltop on 10 acres of gorgeous rural Missouri landscape, Bread of Life's gluten free baking facility is built in a renovated 100 year old barn. Here, three families come together to bake and ship the world's most delicious and wholesome gluten free muffins and brownies to happy folks all over the USA. We use only the very best ingredients, starting with whole grain sorghum and free range eggs. Bread of Life makes things that are not only delicious but also highly nutritious. None of our products contain artificial additives of any kind.

How did all this get started?

The Crowther and Middleton families had been meeting together for prayer and study. We read a book together called The Endowment by Earl Curry. It states "God's people work in the industries of the world- they not only rise and fall with the varying fortunes of these industries, but they must also partake of the very worldly environment that exists in these places of labor. Their peace and their spirituality are marred by this Babylonish environment. God's people are intended to be very largely independent of these worldly industries and this Babylonish environment. Basic industries which provide for the essential needs of life ought already to have been established..."

We believed these words and began to pray together about what kind of business we might start. About that time Glenn Crowther was preparing to go to an elder's conference in Ohio. We all knew he was greatly looking forward to the special time there with the Lord and there was much prayer and fasting among us on his behalf. On the way home from his trip he had an experience that he was eager to share. He called the Middletons over to his house and told us "It just came to me on the way back from Kirtland, we're to have a bakery and the name of it will be Bread of Life." The Middleton's weren't too sure.

A couple of months went by. In a neighboring town there was a bakery auction. Glenn and Kathryn went to it. Being auctioned was a huge 18 pan oven about 7 feet tall and 9 feet deep. The auctioneer couldn't get a bid. New the oven retails for $17,000.00 (seventeen thousand dollars). The Crowther's bought the oven for $125.00 (one hundred twenty five dollars)! When Kathryn called Amy to tell her, the Middletons looked at each other and said "I guess we're going to have a bakery."

The Fire

It's true sometimes things get hot around a bakery, but one night things got out of control...
In our area farmers often burn off their fields in the spring. So it wasn't unusual one spring evening when we noticed the neighbor in his field with several other folks burning off last year's dried weeds. But at 3:00 am when a car horn awoke us from slumber, we knew things had gotten out of control. We sprang from the bed and bounded to the window. Sure enough, three foot tall flames were dancing at the edge of our yard. I sprang to another window to see if the bakery was aflame. To my great relief there was no fire near the bakery. (Don't quit here, the story gets better.) Doug worked more than an hour to put out the flames near the house. The next morning I went back to the bakery to see how close the fire had burned. Now remember, our bakery is built in an old barn in a pasture. The dry grass grows right up to and against the building. As I looked at the pasture I caught my breath and my heart froze. The fire had burned all the way across our field and to within 10 feet of the bakery. There it had gone out in a straight line extending some 30 yards across the field, in the midst of tall dry grass. This was the same dry grass it had burned all the way across the field.
If the fire had not gone out the bakery would have already been ablaze at 3:00 am when the honking of the car awakened us.
